Hey #pihole people. Anyone see stuff like this? Any #homelab folks got ideas how to troubleshoot?
Every once in a while, I get so many DNS requests that my pi-hole (which isn't a pi, it's running in a container on a beefy NAS machine) gets overwhelmed. If you look at the attached graphics, the top 5-6 things are all #iOS devices. An #ipad, a few #iphones. The system labeled "hub" is the pi-hole server itself, and one of the nodes is my macOS 14.7.2 work laptop.
When this happens, as far as everyone on the home network is concerned, "The internet is down." Because #DNS resolution is failing. My limit of simultaneous requests is 150/s. This storm is creating 25000! (That's the highest peak I've ever seen). But the smaller peaks at 5000 are enough to overwhelm the system.
The pihole-FTL.db
is 3Gb. That's big. Any experts out there have ideas on how to troubleshoot and fix the problem?
