@pluralistic
A theory of change [for the #EU, and the #GlobalSouth]: Ditch #IPlaws and #copyprotection, and set #interoperability free!!

"America's robust GDP figures are a mirage, artificially buoyed up by the monopoly rents extracted by #USBigTech, who prey on Americans AND foreigners.
But foreigners don't have to tolerate this nonsense. Governments around the world signed up to protect giant American companies from small domestic competitors (from local app stores—for phones, games consoles, and IoT gadgets—to local printer cartridge remanufacturers) on the promise of tariff-free access to US markets. With #Trump imposing tariffs will-ye or nill-ye on America's trading partners large and small, there is no reason to go on delivering rents to US Big Tech."

So I don’t believe that (even parts of) the #Fediverse will have an “algorithm”. And I myself don’t have the bandwidth or the resources or even the will and the motivation to push for these changes.

Nonetheless, as a denizen of the #GlobalSouth, I would be happy if (by some miracle) the Fediverse gets universal discoverability AND an algorithmic feed tailored to each user. 😃

An overwhelming majority of #GlobalNorth users have no interest in #GlobalSouth topics. They neither follow users focussed on global south issues, nor boost or like posts on global south topics.

That’s their prerogative, of course; but that is also the root cause underlying the above dynamic. There is no obvious resolution to it, at least not within the narrow confines of the #Fediverse.

A relay may complicate the above picture slightly. But if server Y in the above example is an isolated #GlobalSouth instance, or if it is running software (such as Hubzilla) not based on #ActivityPub, then the relay will most likely not be pulling posts from there, so the example will still hold.

In this context, remember many instances do not add relays because the additional posts pulled in through the relay increase the storage and processing costs.

🧵 on how #Mastodon, and the rest of the #Fediverse, invisiblize the #GlobalSouth.

I have argued a few times that for all practical purposes, the global south does not exist for Mastodon, and for the rest of the Fediverse. But many people I interact with do not quite understand how this works in practice.

This series of posts is an effort to illustrate that mechanism.

The lifehistory 'curve of happiness' does not look the same in non-industrialised populations. Interesting comparative study by #MichaelGurven Not really surprising, a bit stunning that there is any assumption Western lifestyles represent some kind of 'universal'?!

'In our study, we found that happiness levels did not consistently follow the U-shaped trajectory commonly observed in industrialized societies. In some cases there was a U-shape. But more often we observed an inverted U-shape, where middle-aged adults reported the highest level of happiness, or no significant age-related trend at all.

Overall, well-being often declined after middle age among resource-poor populations lacking social security and other institutionalized forms of protection. This aligns with prior research among low-income countries and even of wealthy nations during economic crises.

That being said, age itself was a weak predictor of life satisfaction everywhere. Sickness, disability and loss in productivity do a better job of explaining well-being than age. In fact, the few positive effects of age we did find usually disappeared when including measures of these misfortunes in our analysis.'

Recommended #documentary film.

Between 1952 and 1960, Britain fought a vicious war in Kenya against the anticolonial Mau Mau movement. It was an exceptionally bloody conflict, with atrocities committed on both sides. For decades, many of the worst abuses by British colonial forces were kept hidden. Piecing together survivor testimonies and expert analysis from British and Kenyan historians, this film tells a complete and detailed story for the first time of how Britain was involved in systemic torture – including accounts of murders, rapes and forced castrations.

A Very British Way of Torture is a film by Ed McGown and produced by Rob Newman.

“Meetings of the United Nations’ Conference of the Parties (COP) have become little more than talk shops where world leaders and climate activists fiddle while the globe burns,” writes Patrick Gathara. For @thecontinent, he looks back at COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009, where expectations for a political deal that would protect the Global South were sky high, yet the outcome was what Sudanese delegate Lumumba Di-Aping described as an “incineration pact.”

In 2013, #ChineseMining company #Chinalco (中国铝业集团有限公司) sparked an international conversation about extractive impacts with the news it had successfully relocated an entire #Peruvian town of 5,000 residents to clear space for a #CopperMine. At the time, the #relocation project in #Morococha, central #Peru, was touted as a solution to protect villagers from #pollution and #environmental degradation as a result of #mining practices, and as a potential template for #Chinese overseas #investment in #LatinAmerica.

Ten years later, experts describe the move as a “tragedy.”

Joselyn Jaua, a Peruvian #journalist who covers the #environment and communities in the region, explained to #GlobalVoices that Chinalco’s policies have deeply impacted both Old Morococha and New Morococha: “The rise of poverty is notorious for relocated and non-relocated people alike.”
