Huh, imagine, gov't IT systems vastly over priced: rnz.co.nz/news/national/543767 and imagine - the soluion: "buy more off-the-shelf". 🤦 Why not pay local providers to build #libre / #FOSS solutions that can be used across gov'ts around the world?! We're not competing with other gov'ts! What if they did the same & most of our gov't IT systems came from other countries' libre efforts, supported by our *local* industry, not Trump's BigTech puppetmasters or minions, depending on your POV. Show leadership.

I also remember the #libre Serval Project, started by some Aussies who went to Haiti to help following their catastrophic 2010 quake and saw the need for this. The project appears pretty dormant these days (servalproject.com) but the Wayback Machine shows it nearer its heyday: web.archive.org/web/2014022108 It was very very cool, but I suspect very strongly rejected by telcos. I'm thinking we might need to force the issue with gov't regulation.

It is not easy to accidently turn on Translate in Mastodon. You have to go a layer deep in settings, to set your posting language to the language your mastodon app uses.

It doesn't say it's to turn on "offering to translate" - click here.

It doesn't announce you turned on translate for your readers, your posts.

Mastodon should have an obvious button, "TURN ON Translate" or some such, in a platonic way.

#Fedora really tipped #Ubuntu from its perch, and #uBlue as well as #Bazzite are examples of that.

Don't get me wrong, #Mint and even #Arch are still the everyman distros, but point me to another #libre distribution that has pushed the envelope as much as Fedora has.

#Nouveau, #Wayland, #PipeWire, #Ostree, etc. When it comes to #Linux, Fedora is a technology leader, and its users & organizational governance is key to that success.
