I still remember when I was a child and my parents came home happy to tell me and my brother that they had voted for a president for the first time in their lives, in 1989. My dad was about my age now.

When I visited my parents last year, I was lucky enough to take them to the cinema to see "I'm Still Here". That made the film even more moving for me.

"I'm Still Here" is the first Brazilian production to win an Oscar. A movie about the evils of a dictatorship.

It's an American award on the soil of a country that supported a military coup that lasted more than 20 years and, coincidentally, is now on the verge of a coup d'état.

The film explores the profound impact of Brazil's last military dictatorship on one family. Fernanda Torres delivers a powerful performance that offers a glimpse into the daily struggles faced by many during that time. It's a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength of those who endured such difficult times. It also marks the first time a Brazilian actress has won a Golden Globe.

Go see it.

Interview: “What is the Democratic Party for? There’s not really much of an answer right now.”

Advice to Dems: "Gum Up the Works"

"Despite Republicans holding all three branches of the federal government, Trump has mainly used executive orders [etc] to impose his will instead of using legislation.

“They’re trying to create a precedent that presidents cannot be constrained at all."

#NoKingsDay #washington #DC 2025-02-17 in a #bigbrother 1984 #orwellian #digital #dictatorship, no one would see anything of this #protests, all the big media conglomerates, search engines would censor it :( question: why did those peaceful protesters not try to turn over the gov and storm congress? (just asking, probably because they are intelligent unlike the january 6 rioters)

BUT if #Trump and #republicans keep ignoring LEGITIMATE grievances of #citizens like higher and higher #food and #fuel prices = imho companies using #inflation as excuse to increase prices without transparency = #corruption of the #middleman: when is #DOGE gonna investigate that???

u gonna have a violent #civilwar like #riot at your hand Mr #TrumpRegime

because #citizens then have nothing to lose and the #FrenchRevolution did not go well for the #King

#Trump + #Elonmusk START FOCUSING ON THE PROBLEMS OF THE #POOR + #ECONOMY NOW! with smart new ideas of #finance

or face dire catastrophic #disaster #consequences

"Nothing marks so clearly the irredeemable collapse of American democracy as the return of Donald Trump to the White House, four years after attempting to overthrow the last election by force and install himself as president-dictator despite his overwhelming defeat at the polls."

World Socialist Web SiteAmerican degradation: Trump returns to the White HouseThe second term of Donald Trump marks an irreversible collapse of capitalist democracy in America. Only a socialist movement of the working class can provide an alternative.

Mass murderer and War Criminal Henry Kissinger is finally dead!

He won the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Lê Đức Thọ, for their work in orchestrating a ceasefire in the Vietnam War. Two Nobel Prize committee members resigned in protest. During his diplomatic career, Kissinger was involved in orchestrating and/or supporting the Chilean coup and Pinochet dictatorship (over 3,000 killed); the Argentine Dirty War (up to 30,000 killed); the Pakistani genocide in Bangladesh (3 million killed); and the Genocide in East Timor (up to 300,000 killed).

"“Thirty years ago, if I told you that a bunch of billionaires and intellectuals on the right are waiting in the wings to impose a #dictatorship on the #UnitedStates, you would have said that I was insane,” he said.

“But it’s no longer insane. It’s now real. There are those people out there,” Linker added. “The question is: will they get their chance.”"

"The majority of Americans do not want to live under a dictatorship, and we have the power to stop this. But America is never going to prevent the #RedCaesar unless we start talking about it, loudly and right away."

"After the cultural upheavals of the 1960s, #Republicans could win elections through the backlash politics of Richard #Nixon or Ronald #Reagan or the demagoguery of 1988′s “Willie Horton ad.” They then turned to tactics like #VoterSuppression or extreme #gerrymandering as their electorate shrunk.

In 2024, the right sees #dictatorship as its final “Hail Mary” pass. And it just might work."
