The Flow Battery Research Collective (FBRC) are building an open source battery. Technology writer Koen Vervloesem did a nice write-up about their #FOSDEM talk in the Energy devroom. FBRC works on redox flow batteries which are better suited for long-term, stationary storage and less hazardous than Li-ion batteries. FBRC plan to democratize flow battery technology by developing an open source flow battery, starting with a development kit.

The fire at one of the several #GridScaleStorage #battery #VirtualPowerPlant s is still burning in #MossLanding #California . And everyone is still evacuated. It's been about a day now.

Here's some info on the fire: montereycountynow.com/blogs/ne

There are some decent photos here: montereycountynow.com/blogs/ne

It's looking like the facility is going to be offline for a long time. This will probably end up as a case study in my classes in the future.

🎶... Who'd flatten you with mindless glee when they got really newted.
Behind the bottleshop you'd see the roughest justice done:
Yeah, it was assault and battery - but with a sense of fun,
And a drink together after, when the ambulance had come... 🎶

Double TISM week, lucky you.

Someone's left their lights on in the car park of love.
...
Now it's advertisements, and pop videos will whine –
We can't afford the beauty of a silent quarter time! –
So, returning to our cars, just like lives and years,
We turn the key, only to find the love has disappeared."

Battery induction stove

"Because the new range has a battery, it’s possible to plug into an existing outlet.

The tech is designed to charge the #battery from the grid when the most renewable energy is available.

While some #induction stoves have an annoying buzz while they work, Charlie is silent. And if a storm temporarily takes out the grid, both the stovetop and oven can keep going, with enough stored power for three to five meals."

Unfortunate comparison with Tesla, however:

“the battery charges at various points throughout the day (or even as you are using the range, if necessary) and then stores that power to use when you are cooking. The stored power enables the [110v] range to operate with the same capacity as one that is connected to [240v].”

And the future arrives tomorrow.

"Big batteries at home could catch fire! They are a risk!"

No: "the findings indicate that the probability of an home storage systems (HSS) fire is very low (0.0049 %) and is 50 times lower than for a general house fire."

"But solar panels catch fire quite often!"

No: "Compared to the generally low fire probability of an HSS, the probability of PV systems catching fire is a further three times lower"

I have a question for the solar panel / home battery crowd

I want to install roof solar panels to charge a battery in my home, and for the home to draw off the battery only when disconnected from the grid (manual or automatic switch)

Is this possible? What terms should I be researching and using with installers to discuss?

The installers in my area are all oriented toward connecting rooftop solar to the grid for energy credits

While that would be good, I'm not super interested in operating a tiny solar plant for the benefit of my local energy monopolist (esp since they blocked me from installing solar and connecting to their grid when I tried to!)

My goal is to have a renewable source of backup electricity to share with friends and neighbors in the event of an emergency

Please help - boosts welcome

I looked for sodium-ion cells in size 18650, "locally made" in Europe. None of those companies that seem to develop or construct sodium-ion cells in Europe is selling them to end-users. At least, I did not find a shop to buy them from.

Meanwhile, chinese companies are selling 18650 sodium-ion cells on Aliexpress.

Solid State Batteries will reach mass production in the next 2-3 years, lowering the price for electricity storage to (far) below €100/kWh while also offering more safety. US and European firms are however not part of this upcoming megamarket, because we prefer to waste our energy (pun intended) on glorified autocorrect solutions and deepfake (moving) pix. #SarcasmButOnlyHalf 1/5
