Flipboard<p>When Spanish colonizers established a town in the mountains of Bolivia in the 1500s, they might have expected to expand their communities by having babies, but they could not. While Indigenous folks raised families, not a single child of European descent was born for decades. It was all down to the lack of oxygen at altitude, which the settlers were not genetically adapted to deal with. <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.science/@KnowableMag" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>KnowableMag</span></a></span> reports on how scientists are now studying this to see if they can help pregnant people whose bodies are struggling to provide enough oxygen to their fetuses, at any altitude. </p><p><a href="https://knowablemagazine.org/content/article/health-disease/2025/overcoming-risks-of-pregnancy-at-high-elevation" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">knowablemagazine.org/content/a</span><span class="invisible">rticle/health-disease/2025/overcoming-risks-of-pregnancy-at-high-elevation</span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Science</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Biology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Biology</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Health" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Health</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Medicine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Medicine</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Pregnancy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pregnancy</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Newstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Newstodon</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/NewstodonFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewstodonFriday</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/FollowFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FollowFriday</span></a></p>
Flipboard<p>50 years ago, Tim Bliss and Terje Lømo worked in the Oslo lab of the late neuroscientist Per Andersen, where they made a momentous discovery: the fact that when a neuron signals to another neuron frequently enough, the second one will later respond more strongly to new signals for hours afterwards. The phenomenon is called long-term potentiation (LTP) and it’s fundamental to how we learn and remember. <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.science/@KnowableMag" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>KnowableMag</span></a></span> talked to Bliss and Lømo about their discovery, and to other neuroscientists about how they’re applying knowledge about LTP to their research about memory disorders, chronic pain and more. </p><p><a href="https://knowablemagazine.org/content/article/mind/2025/memory-formation-long-term-potentiation" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">knowablemagazine.org/content/a</span><span class="invisible">rticle/mind/2025/memory-formation-long-term-potentiation</span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Science</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Biology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Biology</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Health" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Health</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Medicine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Medicine</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Neuroscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Neuroscience</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Medicine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Medicine</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/MemoryLoss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MemoryLoss</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/ChronicPain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChronicPain</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Newstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Newstodon</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/NewstodonFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewstodonFriday</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/FollowFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FollowFriday</span></a></p>

Sunguramy :nb_lily:<p>:boost_requested: Well since I could use some money now, the whole scientist-without-funding-now thing thanks to stupid executive orders, I got out my prints I have from back when I did art shows and maybe people will...buy some? :) I can sign them if you like. I can also drop ship prints of any of my photography, just DM to ask! It would be nice if I could at least make a couple hundred as my dog had another seizure and I have bills to pay.</p><p>To not "spam" ya'll I am going to post each as a reply to this. So, you can just mute this thread if you don't want to see.</p><p>Please reply with DM on the photo you'd like to purchase, I can send an invoice to pay. kechpaja<p>The more I think about it, the more I come to dislike the term _primate_ as a name for the order including monkeys, apes, and us. Etymologically — and transparently so, if you know to look — it literally means 'one of the first' (or 'noble'), implying that we are better than all other species.</p><p>And that we are emphatically not.</p><p>Finnish, at least, has a more apt term: _kädellinen_, literally meaning 'having hands'. Perhaps something like _manuate_ could be popularized in English as well?</p><p><a href="https://social.kechpaja.com/tags/primates" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>primates</span></a> <a href="https://social.kechpaja.com/tags/biology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biology</span></a> <a href="https://social.kechpaja.com/tags/language" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>language</span></a></p>
