Android Accessibility Progress Report: What’s Changed (and What Hasn’t) Since Spring 2024 https://accessibleandroid.com/android-accessibility-progress-report-whats-changed-and-what-hasnt-since-spring-2024/ #Android #A11y #AI
Reminder: I typically don't follow those who don't use alt text with images or videos. I might make exceptions for those who mostly add alt text, but if the entire timeline is images without it, I either have to add the alt text, which takes time. It's easier not to share them. (I have a lot of friends who use screen readers, plus it's good form: Writing your own alt text lets you provide context that I won't otherwise get.)
In case anyone was wondering
Recommendations for accessible fediverse software?
I'm working on a blog post for people thinking of joining the fediverse and want to include this information!
Here's what I think I know so far (although might be wrong) ... other suggestions welcome
Mastodon's web UI is pretty good from accessibility perspective, but has some issues.
Pinafore used to be the most accessible web UI but isn't maintained anymore. Semaphpore is a fork doesn't seem to have had any updates in the last year, so I'm not sure of its status. Enafore is another fork but it's described as "somewhat unstable".
I haven't seen anything about what Mastodon mobile apps are better or worse from an accessibility perspective.
For Lemmy, OurBlind says that moderators have and continue to work with the developers to improve accessibility; Thunder, a Lemmy app for iOS and Android, performs well; and Mlem developers are implementing native accessibiity.
In the past, Tinder has been more than willing to work with me on accessibility, even on photo verification, but not this time. I even suggested what we have done as an alternative to the standard verification process in the past but, again, I only received radio silence in return. It seems Tinder may no longer wish to offer equal access to, be inclusive to and welcome blind users on their platform. #a11y #fail (2/2)
@ChanceyFleet wow I didn't even know this was possible.

Going back to Hugo so does anybody know of similar themes to this one? Very minimal, very accessible. https://github.com/leonstafford/accessible-minimalism-hugo-theme #Accessibility #A11y #StaticSite #SSG #OpenSource #Hugo

This is a steal for @matuzo's Accessibility Cookbook alone! Go get it!

“How the fuck am I supposed to talk to my coworkers about White supremacy and disability justice when I can’t even get them to pay attention long enough to stop calling alt text ‘alt tags?’”
I might need to have Steve update this mug:

If you've been looking for that next semi-cheap music-making fix but haven't decided what to get, consider Ableton Move.
If you look at the official videos, literature and documentation, you'd be fooled into thinking that it's not actually accessible. This is incorrect.
It runs a web-server for helping you manage samples, recordings and sets, but it also has an undocumented screen-reader which I demonstrate in this video.
Next to Komplete Kontrol, I can say that this has been the most innovative, fun and game-changing piece of hardware I've owned and I thoroughly enjoy working with it.

Excerpt from Peter Kirn's blog about Move:
‘How do I access Move with a screen reader?
Andre Louis has a walkthrough for you, as pointed out here in comments! And as always, it’s terrific. This is honestly worth a watch for sighted users, too, to understand how these interactions work – and it’s required viewing if you work in instrument design.’

If your #blind, #signal does nothing to protect your #privacy. They use #hcaptcha, so if you can’t see the images, you have to enable cross site cookies and give them a valid email. And if you want to contact signal about it, sending your device info via unencrypted email is the only way. This is not how privacy or #security work. You’re better off with iMessage. Or even watsapp! At least they don’t hand your data over to a third party captcha provider. Or send your device info via unencrypted email. #infosec #a11y #accessibility
Help: I was curious does anyone know if the BlindShell 2 or MiniVisoin are sold by any cariers or LifeLine Cariers? I thought Blindshell had an arrangment with one, but couldn't seem to find that info? #a11y
New post on the blog: “You are not a CSS dev if you have not made a CSS reset”
With the numerous CSS resets blog posts circulating now, I decided to bring this post out of my drafts. Cheeky title for some good fun.

Related: I'm trying, once again, to get speakup working on Linux. However, I can find no documentation or useful information anywhere on how this is supposed to work if your distro doesn't come with it pre-configured. I think I have the kernel module loaded, and I think I have the default output set to espeakup, but I never can get it to talk. Suggestions welcome.
Learned about this one from the A11y Slack server. Unfortunately is seems to no longer be maintained. Something I am, understandably, seeing more and more in the #opensource space. ableplayer/ableplayer: fully accessible cross-browser HTML5 media player. #accessibility #a11y
Blind Fedi, do you know of any accessible platform for hosting realtime trivia/quizzes? I was asked by someone who wants to organize trivia nights mainly for blind people over Zoom and have no experience with such services. The participation process is more important in terms of having to be accessible because the organizer will be sighted. Boosts appreciated #a11y #accessibility
